Urban Owl officially opened in January of 2016. Urban Owl’s shop owner, Megan Nelson has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and previously had an online candle and soap-making business in 2012. While business was great, she wanted to branch out to create items for the home while also being able to get a little creative.
The idea for doormats came from Megan’s own need for a doormat. Everything in stores seemed so generic, and she wanted a doormat that would proudly display her personality at her front door. She felt she couldn’t be the only one that felt this way, and got the crazy idea to start hand-painting doormats. Just a year since opening, Urban Owl has met great success and has been featured in BuzzFeed, CountryLiving.com, and the Kansas City Star. Many of Urban Owl doormats can also be found in boutique shops throughout the United States.
In an effort to give back to the community, Urban Owl also donates a portion of sales of its Adopt Don’t Shop line of doormats to Missouri Pit Bull Rescue, an organization devoted to educating others about the misunderstood breed and finding homeless dogs forever their homes.
